We apologize for any inadvertent omission or misspelling and hope any such error will be brought to our attention.2 Leaders in Giving • The Book 2025 TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY United Way Worldwide’s Tocqueville Society is recognized as one of the world’s most prestigious philanthropic institutions for individuals who are passionate about creating strong communities where all can thrive. United Way of the Capital Region created our local Tocqueville Society chapter in 1987 to recognize community leaders who donate $10,000 or more annually to our campaign. Their exceptional philanthropy provides inspiration for others. Membership By investing in United Way’s innovative programs, our Tocqueville Society is driving tangible changes in the Capital Region. In 2024, we welcomed 32 new members, bringing the total membership to 247.Members contributed a remarkable $4,290,523, or 48% of the total dollars raised by United Way. Special thanks to our 2024 Tocqueville Society Chair Jessica Meyers, Vice Chair Dan Sunderland and Second Vice Chair Greg Cavoli. Tocqueville Society Match The Tocqueville Society Challenge Match helps new donors step into the Tocqueville Society. With generous support from the Kline Foundation and the McCormick Family Foundation, United Way matches gifts over a two- or three-year period to the $10,000 level. In 2024, 28 members took advantage of this program. . 2024 Tocqueville Society Highlights Members Support School Readiness Pillar Throughout 2024, our Tocqueville Society focused on Ready for School, Ready to Succeed, United Way’s school readiness program, which prepares children ages 3-5 for kindergarten by bringing together families, school districts and community resources. Members raised an additional $100,000 to add the West Shore School District to United Way’s network of partners. This addition will help more children thrive in the school setting. Events In June 2024, more than 80 guests attended the Tocqueville Society New Members’ Reception held at the beautiful home of Stan and Nancy Custer. Guests learned how United Way is helping prepare children for kindergarten through its school readiness pillar. Dr. Tamara Willis, superintendent of Susquehanna Township School District, spoke about the needs of students and families in her district. Members attended a unique and exclusive reception in October at the new Pennsylvania State Archives. Guests toured this state-of-the-art building and learned more about United Way’s work in school readiness from an education liaison who works directly with children and families in Perry County and a representative from the Capital Area Intermediate Unit, which has a strong partnership with United Way. Special thanks to F&M Trust and UPMC Central PA for sponsoring the event. Volunteering Tocqueville Society members rolled up their sleeves for Day of Caring in September 2024. More than 20 members assembled education kits for children in Ready for School, Ready to Succeed and helped sort school supplies at the Capital Area Intermediate Unit. For Martin Luther King Jr., Day in January 2025, 10 Tocqueville Society members created health kits for Contact to Care , United Way’s access to health care program. Supplies were donated by PA Health & Wellness. This donor group honors the unique contributions women make to our community as philanthropists. United Way’s Million Dollar Roundtable honors our most generous philanthropic leaders. Through their consistent and cumulative support, they demonstrate a passionate commitment to building a stronger and healthier community. Nationally, nearly 500 extraordinary leaders have made gifts of $1 million or more to local United Ways, driving impact and transforming lives, one child, one adult, and one family at a time. Membership is awarded to individuals giving $1 million or more to United Way in one of the following ways: •A one-time gift. •A pledge payable within 5 years. •Cumulative gifts paid within a 10 year period. Locally, three members have made this exceptional commitment: •Lyn & Gerry Hempt •Daniel & Kerry Sunderland, Sun Motor Cars, Inc. •Hersha H. & Hasu P. Shah, Hersha Group. Hersha and Hasu are United Way of the Capital Region’s longest serving Million Dollar Roundtable donors. The couple was the first to join this prestigious society in 2016. They have made two million-dollar donations. The couple founded the Hersha Group of Companies in 1984. Over the years, they have grown the company to be a nationally recognized leader in the hospitality industry whose shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Hersha and Hasu’s true passion is philanthropy, and they believe the highest purpose they can serve is to give back to their community. The Shahs have donated their time and money to numerous causes. In the Harrisburg area, they have served on the boards of various charitable organizations focusing on health care and community development, and endowed the Hersha H. and Hasu P. Shah Program of Hospitality Management at Harrisburg Area Community College. In their native India, they have built hospitals and funded medical clinics to help underserved communities. In 2005, the couple founded the Shree Krishna Foundation, a charitable trust whose goal is to restore eyesight to one million disadvantaged blind people living in third-world countries. In 2010, Hersha and Hasu were honored with the National United Way Tocqueville Society Award, the highest honor for volunteers. They joined a distinguished list of previous recipients including former Presidents Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter, as well as Bill Gates, Bob Hope, John Glenn and Henry Ford, II. SHAH & FAMILYLeaders in Giving • The Book 202 5 7 LA TABLE RONDE DE MILLIONS DE DOLLARS THE HERSHA H. & HASU P. SHAH FAMILY FOUNDATION OVERVIEW The Hersha H. & Hasu P. Shah Family Foundation, more commonly referred to as the Shree Krishna Foundation or “SKF”, was established in 2005. One of the nonprofit’s primary goals is to facilitate the sponsorship of 1 million cataract surgeries for needy individuals in India and around the World. As of December 31, 2024, SKF has partnered with Sankara Eye Foundation, RNC Free Eye Hospital, and Shree Jalaram Arogya Trust to support nearly 800,000 successful cataract surgeries (with donations summing to $5.6M) throughout India for adults and children, who, sadly, would have otherwise endured a lifetime of preventable blindness. MEDICAL OUTREACH In 2005, the foundation built a hospital in Gujarat, India to benefit the disadvantaged who do not have access to quality health care. Since the hospital’s inception, the foundation has continued to support the institution as they develop into a full-service, dynamic health care facility. Most recently, the SKF provided a grant to the hospital which allowed them to open an ICU and Dialysis unit in 2015. All services are provided to patients at a rate that is customized specifically to them, based on their income/financial state. A charitable trust supporting the medical, educational, and scientific needs for the impoverished in India & around the World. INVESTING IN EDUCATION •In 2005, the Foundation funded the “Hersha H. and Hasu P. Shah Program of Hospitality and Lodging Management” at Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC), and also established an endowed fund for scholarships and professional development. •In 2012, created an endowment to The School of Hospitality Business at Michigan State University to provide resources to hospitality interns while he or she gains leadership experience with a hotel managed by Hersha Hospitality Management (HHM). •Scholarship endowments at York College of PA, Penn State Harrisburg, and Central PA College Business School, several of which benefit minority groups. Hersha Hospitality Trust (HT) is a NYSE-listed Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) in the hospitality sector that owns high-quality, upscale hotels in Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Miami, and select markets on the West Coast. The Company’s carefully crafted portfolio of 36 high-quality hotels totaling approximately 5802 rooms meet the tastes and preferences of today’s traveler, and produce a unique combination of high absolute Revenue Per Available Room and sector-leading profit margins, in addition to long-term residual real estate appreciation, income growth and dividend safety.
