LEADERS IN GIVINGTOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY 2 Leaders in Giving • The Book 2026 United Way Worldwide’s Tocqueville Society is recognized as one of the world’s most prestigious philanthropic institutions for individuals who are passionate about creating strong communities where all can thrive. United Way of the Capital Region created our local Tocqueville Society chapter in 1987 to recognize community leaders who donate $10,000 or more annually to our campaign. Their exceptional philanthropy provides inspiration for others. Membership By investing in United Way’s innovative programs, our Tocqueville Society is driving tangible changes in the Capital Region. In 2025, we welcomed 36 new members, bringing the total membership to 259. Members contributed a remarkable $4,908,304, or 54% of the total dollars raised by United Way. Special thanks to our 2025 Tocqueville Society Chair Dan Sunderland, Vice Chair Greg Cavoli, and Second Vice Chair Rebecca Stevenson. 2025 Tocqueville Society Highlights Events In June 2025, 77 guests attended the Tocqueville Society New Members' Reception at the Catherine Hershey School for Early Learning in Harrisburg. Guests learned about United Way’s school readiness program, and our unique collaboration with the Catherine Hershey School to support our common goal of preparing children to succeed in school. In October 2025, 89 guests attended an exclusive reception at Tec Centro Capital Region in Harrisburg. Tec Centro is the newest partner in United Way’s workforce development program, which helps people get — and keep — jobs with opportunities for advancement. 2025 Tocqueville Society Chair Dan Sunderland of Sun Motors Cars, Inc. Tocqueville Society Match The Tocqueville Challenge Match helps new donors step into the Tocqueville Society. United Way matches gifts over a two-year period to help donors reach the $10,000 level. In 2025, 26 members took advantage of this program. Special thanks to the Kline Foundation and the McCormick Family Foundation for their generous grant support of the Challenge Match. Guests received a behind-the-scenes tour of Tec Centro’s facility with on-site occupational training and other critical support services for job seekers. Volunteering Tocqueville Society members supported United Way’s Annual Day of Caring in September 2025 with a special service project. Volunteers filled 350 winter break bags and wrote encouraging notes for preschoolers who attend our school readiness workshops. Volunteers also learned firsthand about the workshops from two of our education liaisons. United Way offers workshops free of charge at 12 local school districts to help children learn academic and social skills. Parents receive educational resources to continue the learning at home. Workshops were expanded into the West Shore School District during the 2025-26 school year with generous additional support provided by Tocqueville members last year. Tocqueville Society volunteers also unloaded and sorted more than 40,000 school supplies at the Capital Area Intermediate Unit in Summerdale as donations poured in from the community during United Way’s Stuff the Bus event. Women of Tocqueville Society The Women of Tocqueville group is open to all women who support United Way of the Capital Region at the Tocqueville level. This donor group honors the unique contributions women make to our community as philanthropists. Members can participate in exclusive volunteer opportunities to enhance our work in the Capital Region. Volunteering In conjunction with Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in January 2026, Women of Tocqueville members assembled 300 emergency period kits and 300 shower kits for students in the Harrisburg School District. Many families struggle to afford these necessities for their children. One of our community health workers talked about United Way’s access to health care program that helps people navigate the health care system, overcome barriers to care and connect with a primary medical home. United Way’s Million Dollar Roundtable honors our most generous philanthropic leaders. Through their consistent and cumulative support, they demonstrate a passionate commitment to building a stronger and healthier community. Nationally, nearly 500 extraordinary leaders have made gifts of $1 million or more to local United Ways, driving impact and transforming lives, one child, one adult, and one family at a time. Membership is awarded to individuals giving $1 million or more to United Way in one of the following ways: •A $1 million one-time gift. •A pledge or challenge grant of a minimum $1 million payable within 5 years. •Cumulative gifts or a combination of gifts totaling $1 million paid within a 10 year period. Locally, three members have made this exceptional commitment: •Lyn & Gerry Hempt •Daniel & Kerry Sunderland, Sun Motor Cars, Inc. •Hersha and Hasu Shah are United Way of the Capital Region’s longest serving Million Dollar Roundtable donors. They were the first to join this prestigious society in 2016 and have made two million-dollar donations. LYN & GERRY HEMPTLA TABLE RONDE DE MILLIONS DE DOLLARS Leaders in Giving • The Book 2026 7 La Table Ronde de Millions de Dollars recognizes individuals who contribute $ 1 million to United Way of the Capital Region. In 2016, Hersha and Hasu Shah became United Way of the Capital Region’s first Million Dollar Roundtable donors. The couple founded the Hersha Group of Companies in 1984. Over the years, they have grown the company to be a nationally recognized leader in the hospitality industry whose shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Hersha and Hasu’s true passion is philanthropy, and they believe the highest purpose they can serve is to give back to their community. The Shahs have donated their time and money to numerous causes. In the Harrisburg area, they have served on the boards of various charitable organizations focusing on health care and community development, and endowed the Hersha H. and Hasu P. Shah Program of Hospitality Management at Harrisburg Area Community College. In their native India, they have built hospitals and funded medical clinics to help underserved communities. In 2005, the couple founded the Shree Krishna Foundation, a charitable trust whose goal is to restore eyesight to 1 million disadvantaged blind people living in third-world countries. In 2010, Hersha and Hasu were honored with the National United Way Tocqueville Society Award, the highest honor for volunteers. They joined a distinguished list of previous recipients including former Presidents Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter, as well as Bill Gates, Bob Hope, John Glenn and Henry Ford, II. The Shahs are the first local recipients of this prestigious award. HERSHA H. & HASU P. SHAH Hersha Group THE HERSHA H. & HASU P. SHAH FAMILY FOUNDATION OVERVIEW The Hersha H. & Hasu P. Shah Family Foundation, more commonly referred to as the Shree Krishna Foundation or “SKF”, was established in 2005. One of the nonprofit’s primary goals is to facilitate the sponsorship of 1 million cataract surgeries for needy individuals in India and around the World. As of December 31, 2025, SKF has partnered with Sankara Eye Foundation, RNC Free Eye Hospital, and Shree Jalaram Arogya Trust to support over 1 million successful cataract surgeries (with donations totaling more than $7.1 million) throughout India for adults and children, who, sadly, would have otherwise endured a lifetime of preventable blindness. MEDICAL OUTREACH In 2005, the foundation built a hospital in Gujarat, India to benefit the disadvantaged who do not have access to quality health care. Since the hospital’s inception, the foundation has continued to support the institution as they develop into a full-service, dynamic health care facility. Most recently, the SKF provided a grant to the hospital which allowed them to open an ICU and Dialysis unit in 2015. All services are provided to patients at a rate that is customized specifically to them, based on their income/financial state. A charitable trust supporting the medical, educational, and scientific needs for the impoverished in India and around the World. INVESTING IN EDUCATION •In 2005, the Foundation funded the “Hersha H. and Hasu P. Shah Program of Hospitality and Lodging Management” at Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC), and also established an endowed fund for scholarships and professional development. •In 2012, created an endowment to The School of Hospitality Business at Michigan State University to provide resources to hospitality interns while he or she gains leadership experience with a hotel managed by Hersha Hospitality Management (HHM). •Scholarship endowments at York College of PA, Penn State Harrisburg, and Central PA College Business School, several of which benefit minority groups.LA TABLE RONDE DE MILLIONS DE DOLLARS 8 Leaders in Giving • The Book 2026 La Table Ronde de Millions de Dollars recognizes individuals who contribute $ 1 million to United Way of the Capital Region. Dan and Kerry Sunderland are passionate about helping people and serving the Central Pennsylvania community. A Mechanicsburg native, Dan graduated from Cumberland Valley High School in 1984 and Juniata College in 1988. The Sunderland family has owned and operated automobile dealerships in Central Pennsylvania for more than 57 years. Dan currently serves as President of the Sun Motor Cars Automotive Group, headquartered in Mechanicsburg, and his son Matt serves as the organization’s Vice President. Sun Motor Cars Automotive Group represents Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi brands. Kerry Sunderland is the owner/operator of two Pure Barre Fitness Studios, located in Harrisburg and Mechanicsburg.
